Hello world – has it really been 13 days?

Animals: Gotta love 'em, Building the Dream

I am dumbfounded – often, I admit – how quickly time seems to pass by me. I swear it has only been a few days since I sat down to muse, then I look and it has been 13 days. I know the adage is that as you mature (can you say get old in PC terms 🙂 ) time ‘flies’; but, I even though I know time remains the same it is my perception of it that changed – it does appear to indeed fly by.

It has been a (mostly) productive 13 days, but – wow – 13 days, really?! Anyway, now that I have realized just how old I am… let me begin with what I have been up to 🙂

We got the replacement chicks from the February shipment that did not survive, 16 Blue Andalusian pullets and 1 mystery chick to pay it forward with, and we now have 8 Blues and 1 mystery chick.  I am not happy with a 50% survival rate, and may have to reconsider using this hatchery.  We are giving it another shot with duck in April (warmer) and again with Turkeys in June, or July – if the survival rate is better we will consider them for chicks again.  The poor survival rate has caused us to say no more bird shipments except April – August; this cuts our time considerably, but we prefer the limited time-frame to the high loss ratio.

On the bright side – we now have an incubator, so we may only be buying meat birds in the future anyway. We are ‘debating’ which birds we want to concentrate on for hatching/ eggs.  In addition to the Blue Andalusians (white eggers)

and the Americana/Auricanas and their crosses (blue, green, olive eggers) that we already have

I want Welsummers (brown eggers):
He wants a sexlink like:
We’ll see, but since my girls (and guy) have great personality and are pretty, I bet I win.  🙂 Even if they are primarily to sell the eggs, why not have them be pretty while pecking at the yard?  😀
So, we have painted living room walls!  YAY!!!!! Floor is being installed this weekend. Y’all – unless you have lived with no walls/ sheetrock with varying stages of tape/mud and or nasty smoked in ceilings (with holes) you probably think I am insane to be so excited about paint… not to mention living with chipboard as your floor for 6 months or so… better than the carpet that was in here, but the dust/dirt accumulated (especially when we had all of the dogs) was horrible! So here are a few before/afters:

Now – I need to buy a fabric for the roman shades (oh, what a shame 🙂 ), paint the door and window frames (the wood is all repurposed, so paint it is) and finish painting the last little bit of the nasty ceiling… remove the ‘craft’ (can you say junk collector) table (or maybe just move it) OH and those canvases are going to have repurposed leather strips attached to the sides to give them a framed (but not) vibe later today.  I’ll post some pics of that project after it is done.
I think, perhaps, y’all will be as happy to have my living room done as I am – then you can stop hearing about it. LOL After the bar area is totally unpacked (which means the floors/baseboards are in!) I will post my final pictures – I promise.
Now for grins and giggles, I leave you with new pics of the animals (and Kem):

Kem looking over the property – usual hand on hip carrying his bottle of water; it has been refilled about 15 times and is his only ‘bad plastic habit’ I have yet to break (mine is – admittedly – Ziploc bags…).
